Looking for cheaper insurance??

Time was, when we had little choice about where to buy insurance from. The market was dominated by a very few insurers and many of us were forced to use nominated ones if we needed, for instance, home buildings insurance to cover the cost of a mortgage. Times have moved on, happily, and now there is a large choice of companies to choose from and prices, in real times have fallen - part of this is thanks to greater efficiency within the insurance companies themselves (computerisation does have it's advantages) but the greater part is down to a huge increase in competition which has forced many companies to look carefully at their business models.

A lot of insurance used to be sold by traveling salesman who not only sold the policies but sometimes collected the premiums too, usually monthly or weekly. This is obviously not a very cost effective system so policy payouts were much smaller than they could have been. The wide acceptance of payment by standing order, then direct debit made the collection side, at least, much more efficient.

Higher competition meant that the method of selling the policies had to be looked at carefully too. Direct selling, sidestepping the middleman, was adopted by a number of companies and then finally the wholesale adoption of the Internet with it's economies of scale and low overheads made this the medium of choice for many go-ahead insurance companies and now you can get quotes online, order policies and pay for them withot leaving your chair at home for insurance to cover your car, home, house contents, pets, holidays, critical illness, etc etc etc.
